This Journal began at the suggestion of Lois Boyer, a close friend, who, in about 2020 remarked at the number of photographs I had of the animals and birds that were around my property and suggested I make a book of them. I thought it would be a good documentation project, so I have been taking and saving photos of animals and birds since then and have assembled the images in this pictorial journal. The images have been collected over several years before and after 2020, so there may be some duplications, either by an error in editing or by design. I have named the ones I know, and left the ones I don’t to your imagination.
I delight in the realization that I live and benefit from this property just as they do. It takes from me and I give to it just as the animals and birds on the following pages. There is a continual give and take with Mother Nature. The animals and birds are instinctively aware of this. My awareness has been more evolutionary.
The photographs and commentary are mine. My inscriptions are often quotes of what I suppose the subject on the page might be thinking or stating in its own way.
I have enjoyed assembling this Journal. Each time I review it, it reminds me of how strong and yet fragitl life is. It also reminds of the great variety of life forms I get to observe just by staying home.
I don’t expect many people will view this work, but I hope those of you who do, will take pleasure in the various populations depicted here. Some take nourishment from others, some are synergistic, helping each other through life, some make beautiful music and others make terrible noises of distress when attacked, they all deposit waste that nourishes plant life, which in turn provides nourishment back, some dispose of the dead, but they are all beautiful in their own distinctive way. They are real and are a part of the micro-ecosystem that is this property, as am I and all of those who visit me.
